What you’re looking at
This page contains satirical content targeting early 20th-century militarism and international tensions. The main cartoon is titled "Organization" and describes a fictional "International Society for the Promotion of General Discord among Nations"—a direct mockery of international diplomatic efforts and arms buildup preceding World War I. The satire targets political and military leaders who, despite claiming to want peace, actively promote war through propaganda, weapons development, and soldier recruitment. Characters like "Professor Bumstead Diggerby" and "General Killingly Gorehaven" represent stereotypical warmongering officials. The cartoon criticizes how governments deliberately keep citizens "blind" to war's disadvantages through politicians and media manipulation. The final editorial note (by Gerald Stanley Lee) comments that such widespread deception requires coordinated effort from many people—a pointed critique of propaganda machinery. The page also includes advertisements and a lighthearted poem about a pelican, typical of Life magazine's mixed content format.

Delegates from all of the coun- tries on the globe were present. Great enthusiasm was displayed in spite of certain sinister rumors that there was a fair prospect of peace in sight. In disposing of this, the President said: “It is to the interest of our enemies to convey thesimpressioa that ‘peace on earth and good will toward men’ may come at any moment, but, my friends, do not be alarmed; we were never stronger.” Professor Bumstead Diggerby read a stirring paper on new methods of fooling working men into becoming soldiers. The professor showed that it would take a thousand years yet thoroughly to awaken the average workman to the disadvantage of war. “We can keep them blind as long as we have the politicians with us,” he exclaimed. (Great applause.) A long series of resolutions, em- Lodying instructions for foreign diplo- mats on how to keep each country secretly suspicious of every other coun- try, were adopted unanimously. Sev- eral new machine guns, quick firing rifles, bombs and other high explosives showing their wonderful work were displayed with moving pictures of fields of battle. This aroused great enthusiasm. General Killingly Gorehaven, of the English Army, and one of the heroes of the Boer War, presented a complete list of various methods of looting and Mamma Sloth: come vown Here, ERIC! pO YOU WANT ALL THE BLOODY TO RUSH TO YOUR torturing prisoners, and recommended that a school be started in which sol- diers could be taught how to produce the most practical results in the short- est space of time. “Not that we are unnecessarily cruel,” he obser’ “Merely thot we wish to give a practical demonstration te the enemy of our military effi- ciency.” The meeting was closed with a long prayer by the Rev. Pompom Wild- blast, who asked the blessing of Heaven upon the deliberations. Tits is a kind of fool that has never been possible until these latter days. Only a very great many people, all of them working on him at once, and all of them watching every one clse working at once, can produce this kind. —Cxowps—By Gerald Stanley Lee.
