What you’re looking at
This page contains a narrative story rather than a political cartoon. It recounts an anecdote about **Bahalul**, a historical jester figure in an Islamic court (appears to reference the Caliph Haroun), and compares him to **Chicot**, a famous French court jester under Henri III. The satire works through ironic reversal: Bahalul sits on the sacred throne as a joke, gets brutally beaten by guards, then uses this experience to mock the Caliph's suffering—implying that wielding absolute power is itself a form of punishment. When ordered to marry respectably, Bahalul flees on his wedding night, claiming the bride's noise was unbearable, thereby satirizing both duty and domesticity. The story's point: even a fool recognizes that authority and responsibility bring their own painful consequences. The page is primarily this literary content, with advertisements for International Motor Trucks and a health/breathing book filling the margins.

Not Such a Fool Bahalul one day, finding no one in the throne room of the sovereign father of the faithful, seated himself on the cushions of the priest-monarch. The guards near were horror stricken at be- holding the jester on the sacred couch of authority, imitating the manners of Haroun himself; just as Chicot, long after, used to mimic those of Henri III. They speedily dragged him from the throne of cushions, and began bastin- adoing him with such violence that the Caliph, hearing his cries, entered the hall and demanded the reason of the out- ery. “Uncle,” said Bahalul, “I am not screaming on my own account, but on yours. I pity you. I have only tried royalty for five minutes, and I am al- ready in a fever of pain inflicted by these fellows. What must you endure, then, who occupy the same distinguished seat every day!” Bahalul seems to have been a dissi- pated fellow, and the Caliph enjoined him to marry and live discreetly, loving his wife, and bringing up his family in honor. The jester so far obeyed as to go through the nuptial ceremony ; but as he was conducting his wife to her apart- ment, the uncourteous bridegroom sud- denly paused, looked as if he were pet fied, and, declaring that he had never heard such a tumult in his life, took to his heels, and did not reappear for months. Meanwhile, the deserted bride had procured a divorce, and then Baha- 12 years Jul made his rentrée at Court. “So!” exclaimed the Caliph, with an inquiring air. “Ay, ay!” cried the fool, “ you would ieee << With 4 of our trucks the Baldwin Locomotive Works replaced 24 horses and 12 horse-trucks, netting a saving of 334% per year.
