What you’re looking at

This page primarily consists of **advertisements** rather than political cartoons, though it includes one small satirical illustration. The notable content is an **editorial titled "The Science of Not Doing Your Duty,"** which critiques public officials for neglecting their actual work to pursue higher office through campaigning. The piece sarcastically references **President Taft and Governor Woodrow Wilson** as examples of men who spent minimal time at their posts, instead traveling to make speeches and build political support. It mentions **William Randolph Hearst** as a precedent, noting he attended Congress only 29 days during his term. The article uses biting irony, ending with the hope that eventually public offices will be so "perfected" that elected officials won't need to show up at all. The page's left side features a small cartoon labeled "A Curious View of Life," depicting someone reading LIFE magazine while upside-down—a visual joke about perspective. The remaining content comprises product advertisements for Londonderry mineral water, Eux-e-sis shaving cream, and Murray & Lanman's Florida Water.

Manufactored by Aimee Lloyd & Co.,London, England } NewYork The Science of Not Doing Your Duty A few of us who are still old-fashioned believe that when a man is assigned to a sk—and paid for it—he should give up as much of his time to it as custom, tra- dition and honor require. This notion, of course, has long since been exploded, And it has been ex- ploded in such a manner that the most inconspicuous office boy in the country can read the moral. A public office is said to be a public matter of fact, a public office is simply a means whereby the man who holds the office can spend most of his time outside in making arrange- ments to get into a higher office, of to in the same office after his term has expired. Notable examples of this up-to-date idea are President Taft and Governor Woodrow Wilson. President Taft has spent most of his time in office in keep- ing away from it. Governor Wilson has done the same thing, Each of these gen- tlemen is concerned in working up enough public sentiment to continue hint in office, and naturally the only way that public sentiment can be worked up is by travel—by making stump speeches. We believe that Mr. Hearst was the first man to sct this notable idea into action. When he was elected to Con- gress, if our recollection serves us, he was only twenty-nine da his post of duty during the whole term. It reminds us of the story of the boy who made up his mind that he would not say his prayers. “T didn’t say them last night; I'm not going to say them to-night, and, if noth- ing gits me, I’m never going to say ‘em.” 1320 No SOAP ~ ~ No BRUSH ~ No Cup You will find shaving a luxury In duc course of time we shall undoubt- edly perfect our scientific management of public offices so that when any man is elected to one, the entire work wil! be done for him by somebody else, and he can spend all of his time in rangements to get a better office Scotch Sergeant (drilling ecruits)— When I say “Right tur-r-rnt” at last syllable 0" the wi tur-r-rn.— Punch, RRAYELANMAy Mu Florida Water ord “tur-r-rn” you S “THE UNIVERSAL PERFUME” Is unique in versal in popular be replaced by KQ For the f tators. ter shaving, asa Bf exercising, eral dressing- matchless.
