What you’re looking at

This page contains early 20th-century American satirical commentary on free speech and religious hypocrisy, alongside period advertisements. **"Bullets" section**: Life reprints inflammatory rhetoric from John L. Belford, a Catholic priest in Brooklyn, who called Socialists "mad dogs" requiring silencing "by a bullet." The satire's point: Life highlights the double standard in how authorities treat incitement to violence. If a Socialist had published similar calls to shoot Catholic priests, he'd face immediate arrest. Yet Belford "was still at large," exposing the privileged position of religious figures in espousing violence against political opponents. **"Same Sort of Thing Needed Here"**: A brief joke about a new London society prosecuting monument-erectors and "title-hunters" cluttering public spaces—social satire on bureaucratic absurdity. **Advertisements**: The page is largely filled with product ads (Pebeco toothpaste, silver-deposit glassware), typical of Life's mixed editorial-commercial format. The central satire critiques unequal application of sedition laws based on social power and religious status.

Bullets We read the following in a recent number of the Nativity Mentor. The author is John L. Belford, a priest of the Church of the Nativity, Brooklyn: Socialist is busy. He flaunts flag and openly preaches his His great point of attack His. pow an actual menace to our city. There scems to be no law to suppress or control him. He is more dangerous than cholera or smallpox—yes, he is the mad dog of society’ and should be silenced, if need be by a bullet.” Very interesting. But just suppose a Socialist. had mounted a platform in Union Square and advocated that all Catholic priests be shot. How long would it have taken the police to arrest him for inciting to violence? Just sup- pose that the Appeal to Reasou had con- tained the above utterance. How long would it be before the postal authorities swooped down upon it and closed the rails to such incendiary matter? At the hour of going to press the Rev. John L. Belford was still at large. E.0. 4. It is, there- fore, obviously of the utmost national importance, not only that no further monuments be erected here, but that most of those which exist should be re- moved without unnecessary delay. —London Tru Tuexr is a high rate of infant mortal- ity among children of the imagination. comicbooks.com
