Smith and your answer thereto, relative to questions on vaccina- antitoxins and the Pasteur treat- I regret that Lire did not give a more extended discussion of the questions put by Mr. Smith, as they are particularly saliant in their bearing on the whole his- tory and development of the study into the causation and prevention of zymotic diseases. In speaking of these subjects let us not forget we are dealing with a department of science which has had the earnest attention of eminent men since the exploitation of vaccination by the English physician Jenner in 1776— a period of 134 years, the last thirty h have been rich in the de- velopment and application of bacteri- ology It seems reasonable to me to expect that a publication so widely read and well known as Lire should, at least for the benefit of doctors, sanitarians, sani- lary engineers, or other professional men who make a scientific study of matters concerning the health of the individual and the community make a more defi nite exposition of the stand it has taken on these questions which are of great importance to the welfare of mankind It is perhaps almost unnece: point out that any 1 opinion either advocating or condemn- ing vivisection, vaccination or the thor; of antitoxins, while being useful to in- fluence or prejudice the public carries little weight with scientific men.
