What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertising**, not political satire. It features alcohol ads (liqueurs, whiskeys, bitters) typical of early 20th-century Life magazine. The only satirical content appears as **two brief joke excerpts**: 1. **"OF WHAT SHE DIED"**: A ethnic humor joke (German accent dialect) about an old German man whose wife dies in a hospital. The dark comedy: doctors kept saying she was "improving" each day, yet she died—so the husband concludes she died of "improvements." This mocks medical optimism and incompetence. 2. **"SHALL THE PEOPLE RULE?"**: A political joke about democratic ideals. A politician claims "the people" rule, then reveals the contradiction: "We are the people"—suggesting politicians monopolize power despite democratic rhetoric. Both jokes reflect early 20th-century satirical magazine humor: ethnic caricature, cynicism about institutions (medicine, politics), and wordplay. The page otherwise consists of liquor advertisements claiming superiority and medicinal benefits—commonplace before modern advertising regulations.

Judge. OF WHAT SHE DIED An old German woman became ill and was taken by her to a hospital for treat- ment. The first day sie was there, when her husband called to inquire about her, the doctor said she was improving. On the second day he was again told she was improving, and on the third and fourth days the assurance was the same. This was very encouraging to the old German; but when he called on the fifth d he was told that his wife was dead. In his gr he sought his favorite saloon to drown his sor- row. “Vat's de matter?"’ asked the sympathetic bartender, noticing his customer's despondent condition “Ach! My wife iss dead,’” replied the Ger- man, “So? Vat did she die of?’ asked the bar- tender. “Improvements,” replied the bereaved hus- band, calling for another glass of beer.—Beil- man. “ Suatt the people rule?"’ “ Sure,’’ answered the professional politician.
