What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertising with three short humorous anecdotes**—not political satire. The advertisements promote alcohol (Club Cocktails, John Jameson Whiskey, Underberg Bitters) typical of the pre-Prohibition or early Prohibition-era magazine. The three brief stories illustrate common themes: 1. **"In Spite of the Supreme Court"**: A Toronto police magistrate named Colonel Blank dispenses justice by personal judgment rather than legal technicality, and the Supreme Court surprisingly upholds his informal ruling. The joke mocks rigid legal systems versus practical justice. 2. **"Adaptable Literature"**: A persistently clever book salesman tries selling to an antisocial man (Eli Hobbs) with no wife or children, finally suggesting the book as a projectile to throw at his cat. 3. **"A Bishop in Anger"**: A dignified bishop loses his temper while playing billiards, snapping his cue in rage—undermining the stereotype of clergy as perfectly self-controlled. These are gentle, class-conscious humor pieces mocking human nature rather than political figures.

In Spite of the Supreme Court OLONEL BLANK, a police magistrate of To- ronto, has a local reputation for dispensing jus- tice in his equity mill with no especial regard for the intricacies of the law. The Colonel is highly re- spected in the community. Every man gets equal and exact justice in his court. Sometimes the lawyers appeal from his decisions, claiming they are not based on the law as it stands on the books. The and kept on appealing until the court of last resort was reached. The Colonel came into his office one morning and was met by a legal friend. “Good-morning, Colonel," said the friend; “I must congratulate your lordship this mornin, “What is the provocation?” “Haven't you scen the morning papers? The Supreme Court has confirmed your judgment in the case of So-and-So.” the Colonel replied, as he drew off his gloves, “I still believe I'm right.”—Saturday Eve- ning Post. Adaptable Literature HE book agent had spent a discouraging morn- ing, and when he had an opportunity to scan the face of Eli Hobb at close range he felt that there was small chance of making a sale. However, he had more than one method of suggestion. “Sitting out here on the piazza afternoons with your wife, this would be the very book to read aloud,” he said, ingratiatingly, to Mr. Hobbs, tak- ing the other rocking-chair and opening the large | red-covered volume. “T don’t read and I haven't any wife,” Mr. Hobbs, dril “Dear me!” said the book agent. wife is dead, perhaps there are children, children find this book"”—— “There are no children,” interrupted Mr. Hobbs. “There's nobody but myself and my cat.” “Well,” said the book agent, “don’t you ever want a good heavy book to throw at her, just to ease your feelings ?”—Youth's Companion. A Bishop in Anger T IS popularly supposed that bishops possess the power of self-control in a perfect degree, but some- times the best of them disclose the fact that, after all, they are but men. On one occasion a certain Lord Bishop, eloquent and saintly, whose name is almost a household word in England, was preaching at the opening of a new church, and for a few days stayed at a country house in the neighborhood. ‘This bishop was excessively fond of a game of billiards, and could hold his own on the cloth against the majority of amateurs. During this visit his Lordship played several quiet games with his host, but one morning had a pro- longed run of bad luck, which so exasperated him that at last he entirely lost his temper, and in his rage snapped the cue in two across his knee. This mad action scemed to bring the bishop to his senses, and with profuse regrets he apologized to his host for his conduct, declaring that he would not have had it happen for the world. But the host coolly replied: “T must beg you, my Lord, to think no more about the matter. Iam really glad that it occurred, as for many years I have been wishful to see what a bishop | was like when he wanted to use-bad language.”— | Tit-Bits, replied “Well, if your Now, Be defense in a case of some moment appealed once, | $10,000 for one REEL To produce the first perf “TAKA PA} RT” A, F.
