What you’re looking at
This page contains three distinct satirical pieces: **"No Partiality"** recounts a Hungarian justice anecdote mocking arbitrary judicial systems. A magistrate punishes a prisoner for stealing a goose, but then—absurdly—also sentences the complaining victim and the witness to equal prison time, demonstrating comically biased "impartiality" where everyone gets punished regardless of actual guilt or innocence. **"Rhapsody of a Young Lawyer"** satirizes a young attorney's romantic fantasies. A mysterious veiled woman consults him about remarriage timing, sparking his imagination about fame and fortune—until she pays only one dollar and leaves, deflating his dreams. The satire mocks lawyers' mercenary daydreaming. **"The Blushing Bride"** jokes about a clergyman performing multiple marriages for the same woman. When asked the date, he's corrected: this is only her *third* marriage, not her ninth—implying she's a serial bride. The remaining content is period advertising for whiskey, playing cards, and travel services—typical of Life's commercial pages.

An Englishman was traveling in a wild part of Hungary, and anxious to sce the in- stitutions of the country, he made an application to a town magistrate, asking to hear how justice was conducted. The magistrate, gorgeous in a magnificent Magyar costume, received him cordially, and sent for any case which might be awaiting trial. A gigantic gendarme in an immense cocked hat ushered in a prisoner, a plaintiff and a witness. The prisoner was accused of stealing the plaintiff's goose, “Well, said the magistrate to the accuser, “what have you to say?” “Please, your high mightiness, the prisoner stole my goose.” ‘The magistrate turned to the witness. “What have you to say?” “Please, your high mightincss, I saw the prisoner steal the goose.”” “Prisoner, what have you to say?” ease, your high mightiness, I did not steal the The magistrate then delivered the sentence. “TI give you a fortnight in prison,” he said to the accused, “for stealing the goose.” To the plaintiff he said, “I give you a fortnight in prison for not looking after your goose,” and turning to the wit- You shall have a fortnight in prison for not ing your own business.” Rhapsody of a Young Lawyer ERE at my roll-top desk I sit and bend me o'er a legal tome and have a pleasant sense, to wit, that I am really quite at home. ‘The peace we cannot understand has claimed my spirit more and more; I yield at last to its demand—I like the interesting law. The Blushing Bride CLERGYMAN, having performed the marriage ceremony for a couple, undertook to write out the usual certificate, but, being in doubt as to the day of the month, he asked, “This is the ninth, is it not?” “Why, parson,” said the blushing bride, “you do all my marrying, and you ought to remember that this is only the third.”"—Current Literature.
