What you’re looking at

This cartoon satirizes the poor condition of American roads in the early 20th century. A man (George) tells his wife their automobile has broken down and cannot be repaired—she'll have to walk. The wife protests indignantly, pointing out the muddy, rutted road conditions are so terrible she wouldn't even make a dog walk on them. She demands he push the car instead. The satire targets both the unreliability of early automobiles and the abysmal state of American rural/suburban roads, which were largely unpaved dirt tracks prone to mud and deterioration. The joke's bite comes from the wife's logic: if roads are too bad for walking, pushing a heavy car through them is even more absurd—yet that's what he must do.
