# Analysis of Life Magazine Page (Volume XVI, Number 406) This page contains social commentary rather than political cartoons. The top article "Stop the Music!" criticizes wealthy New York philanthropists ("Metropolitan trustees") who permit Sunday concerts in Central Park, arguing these disturb the Sabbath peace and corrupt public morals—a contrast to the "good Museum" which remains closed on Sundays. The second item, "Would Like It to Escape," is a brief joke about Chicago's reputation as an undesirable, inescapable city. The sketches labeled "A.D. 1890" and "A.D. 1790" under "Not So Much Difference" appear to compare women's fashions across a century, suggesting minimal change in women's dress styles. The bottom cartoon depicts a policeman confronting a street child, illustrating urban class differences.

VOLUME XVI. ° L]| k E ° NUMBER 400. STOP THE MUSIC! Is there no way of putting a stop to the Sunday concerts in the Park? Such disregard for the feelings of the Metropolitan trustees is little short of brutal. Have the city fathers no respect for the convic- tions of these progressive philanthropists? It is mortifying that thou- sands of impious wretches should be permitted to desecrate the Sabbath by strolling about beneath those magnificent trees and listening to un- principled music. What a contrast to the good Museum! Empty and cold, it frowns religiously upon the thousands who have never seen the interior. Lucky it is for the public morals that these amiable trustees, at least, realize the corrupting influence of their hidden treasures. WOULD LIKE IT TO ESCAPE. *© CO the Fair will be held in Chicago?” remarked an Eastern visitor, “Oh, yes,” replied a subscriber, mournfully, “there seems to be no possibility of its getting away.” Policeman: Do YOU WAST TO CRC L.G.: Do you sur cutting severity) 1 Ds P | ER AN LIVED ON THR AVENOO, AN’ DRESSED IN SILK AN?
