A poor play, it has been made to seem very much poorer than it is by some of the hamiest acting un- covered hereabouts in a long time and by a species of production that is much better suited to a Knights of Pythias burial service than to drama. The guilty party in this latter department is David Burton, who has directed the ex- hibit with the deliberation of a rheumatic octogenarian putting on his socks. The pace is so slow that, by the time the first act ends, the audience is uncomfort- ably certain that it sed the last train to Forest Hills. Prof. Burton will be remembered as the producer who put on “The Swan,” with its effective dinner service scene. The reviewers duly praised the staging of that scene and ever since then the M. Bur- ton, unable to get the pleasant sound of the praise out of his ears, has been devoting himself to re- staging the same doggone thing. I am not good at statistics, but I venture the opinion that he has served more dinners and suppers in the last two years than any headwaiter in New York. There is still another one in “Puppets of Passion,” with the same old illuminated glass-ware and faney napery and the same old elaborate show on the part of waiters and bus boys.
