Making a play out of the novel was surely no easy task, but it seems to me that the job has been managed very adroitly. There are some folks, of course, who, whenever a favorite novel of theirs is drama- tized, run around pulling their hair over the things that have been left out, and these souls are not absent on the present occasion. But it was no more possible to make a play out of La Kennedy's book and of neces- sity not leave many things out than it would be possible to dramatize Wells’ “Outline of History” and leave everything in. If there was any way to preserve the musical atmosphere of the novel intact, I am too poor a dramatic critic to imagine it. The play, whatever fault may be found with it, remains a delightful evening. Its characters are as in- gratiating as they were in printers’ ink; its atmosphere is that of the novel; and the tale it tells retains all the novel’s pleasurable melancholy. I believe that you will enjoy it. ir “How Kine,” by Mark Swan, is a dreadful dose of drivel put on by Anne Nichols, who is facing starvation and who has been driven to its production in order to get enough money to keep life in her body. Miss Nichols, as is well known, lost her all on “Abie’s Irish Rose” and, after her magnanimous sacrifice to art, found herself in dire straits. In sucha juncture, criticism must be charitable. One can only hope that the production will net a sufficient sum to keep the poor girl out of the poorhouse.
