Some of us need a lot of nature, others not so much. Personally, I would just as soon keep a baseball in a dish of gravel, but if Mrs. Herold can get pleasure out of an ugly, sterile little bulb from Woolworths, far be it from me to deny her the luxury. That is my way of “saying it with flowers” to her. In a recent Saturday Evening Post advertisement, there was a headline: “Does He Still Send You Flowers? My answer to that is, no, and I never did to any great extent. But I never kick one of Mrs. Herold’s bulbs out of the house. I won Mrs. Herold with groceries. Our courtship was conducted at a great distance. Ours was a sort of mail-order courtship. I never felt that it would be expressing myself very dynamically to her by tele- graphing her flowers. I used to go to the delicatessen and make up packages of jelly and pickles and one thing and another, perhaps a loaf New York City, N. Sometimes I included a book or a parlor lamp, or something else to show thought and study. Well, to make a long story short, I got her. The other day I bought her a bunch of high-school grapes for $2.41. My policy is to keep her sur- prised all the time. Sometimes I come home evenings, out of a clear sky—anything to keep her inter- ested. Flowers are a little bit too auto- matic, somehow. There has been so much “Say It With Flowers” adver- tising that it now amounts almost to a threat. Take the advertisement I quoted above. It reveals its threatening nature by the wording of its headline. “Does He Still Send You Flowers?" Now, this ad is supposed to sell flowers, but it is addressed not to flower buyers, but to flower recipi- ents. It is intended to get wives to feel a little bit sorry for themselves because they are not getting their comicbooks.com
