What you’re looking at

This page is primarily an advertisement disguised as editorial content. Judge magazine declared "National Smile Week" (February 5-12, 1922) as a morale-building initiative, thanking various civic organizations for support. The five smiling faces shown are promotional images for "Happiness in Every Box," a candy product. The page announces a $1000 contest where readers clip out these faces and mail them in, with winners announced later. For modern readers: this represents early 20th-century advertiser-friendly magazine culture, where companies could sponsor "public service" campaigns that boosted their brands. The cheerful, earnest tone—emphasizing happiness and morale during the post-WWI period—reflects 1920s optimism. The contest mechanics (cutting and mailing clippings) were typical period promotional tactics, essentially crowdsourcing free marketing by engaging readers as participants.
