What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertisements and light humor pieces**, not political cartoons. The content includes: **"Stories with Smiles"** section contains two anecdotes: 1. A contrast between an aggressive, pushy boy and an implied modest boy seeking employment—suggesting the quiet boy's patience and restraint are superior virtues despite surface appearances. 2. A railway conversation between two working-class men ("Bill" and "Charlie") discussing a newspaper's diverse content. **Visual elements**: The Wellington pipe advertisement dominates the left side; other ads promote books on sex education, accounting correspondence courses, and patent services—typical early-20th-century trade publications. **Right-side advertisements** hawk motorcycles, whiskey for hospitals, and a newspaper clipping service. The humor is gentle and moralistic rather than satirical—promoting traditional values of humility and hard work over flashy self-promotion. There are no identified political figures or sharp social criticism; this appears to be a general-interest humor and advertising publication rather than political satire.

Stories with Smiles Two Kinds of Boys—The story is told of a boy who forced his way into a mer- chant’ 's private office and said to him: “Excuse me, (sit, but I want a job, and responded the merchant, “and why are you in such a hurry?’* “Got to hurry,” replied the youngster. “Left school yesterday and haven't struck anything yet. I can’t waste time, and if you haven’t got anything I'll be moving on. The only place I can stop long is where they pay me for it.” “When can you come?” inquired the sur- prised boss. “Don’t have to come,” was the quick re- ply. “I’m here now, and would have been at work before this if you'd said so.” The sequel, of course, is that the boy got the job and went to work on the spot. We all know the moral to be conveyed. It’s a perfectly good story—one of the kind that go well in interesting talks and magazine articles by brisk, well-dressed young fellows who are showing old business men all about efficiency and economy. But isn’t it just possible that the quiet boy who was sitting modestly in the anteroom, waiting for permission to address the mer- chant, and who had no fireworks conversa- tion to hand out when he was given a chance to ask for a job, was the better boy of the two and the winner in the long run?—Clere- land Leader. To Suit All Tastes—The following con- versation was overheard in a railway train not long ago: Just as the train was moving from the station two men were bundled into a carriage. Both were of the sporting type, and were evidently particularly keen on said Bill, handing his friend an evening paper. After a few minutes of silence Charlie re- marked sententiously: “Wonderful things, newspapers, ain’t they, Bill?
