What you’re looking at

This page from *Judge* magazine contains primarily **advertisements** interspersed with satirical commentary on **women's suffrage**. The main political content criticizes Philadelphia for opposing women's voting rights despite being the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence. The article mocks anti-suffrage arguments, particularly the claim that granting women votes would double election costs. A dialogue labeled "Heard After Election Day" portrays working-class men acknowledging women received significant vote totals in recent elections (likely referencing 1912-1914 campaigns), suggesting suffrage momentum was building. The satire emphasizes that suffragists ultimately had to defend their cause on **economic grounds**—proving equal suffrage states didn't see tax increases—rather than moral arguments, suggesting pragmatism defeated idealism in the political debate. The page also includes unrelated comic snippets ("Rediagnosed," "Hard Part") typical of *Judge*'s format, plus hotel and product advertisements.

Send for Folder i if Philadelphia, unmindly of the fact that the Declaration of Independence went forth from its portals to astound the world, slammed the door in the face of a reform which finds its justification in that same Declaration of which Philadelphia boasts? Woman suffrage is at the door of every com- monwealth in the East and Elbert Hubbard was right when he said, ‘Every knock is a boost.” Heard After Election Day “Wilt. the wimmin got a bigger vote than Taft in New Jersey, and a bigger one in New York than Taft or Roose- velt in 1912 or Glynn in 1914. Those fellers ain’t got nothin’ on the wimmin anyhow.” “Oh, those suffrage arguments! Those objections answered! Have we got to listen to them for another year or so? ‘Why didn’t the men give the women the vote to shut them up?” “Hum! forty-two percent of the vote was cast for suffrage in New York state. If it is as close as that, next time the voter will retire his instinct to the junk heap, get out his gray matter and dust it up, and vote according to his intelligence rather than his prejudice.” The Final and Moving Argument Americans are dubbed ‘money chasers.”” They never miss a chance to resent it or, it would scem, to prove it. The late suffrage campaign is a case in point. The canny anti-suffrage speakers talked one minute about not dragging unwilling women to the polls to vote and nine minutes about doubling the cost of elections if equal suffrage was granted. The suffragists started the campaign on a high moral plane and kept it there till circumstances forced them to come down off their high horse and defend their reform as a business proposition. So in the last hours of the struggle they were found rounding up the testimony of the governors of equal suffrage states and spreading it broadcast to prove that votes for women produced no mounting of the tax roll, exactly’as the woman in the home has proverbially assured her husband that the dress she wanted him to buy for her would not eventually add one cent to the total cost of her wardrobe. Rediagnosed “IT should like to make your case my study,” said the Eminent Specialist. “But I haven’t a cent,” objected the Case. “Did I say my study? My vestibule, I meant—this way out, please!” Hard Part Friend—So you are going to have a real old-fashioned English Christmas, even though you are in a New York flat?
