What you’re looking at

This page is primarily **advertising** with one notable editorial feature: "Yarns of the Ballplayers" by Ed A. Goewey, recounting an anecdote by John ("Stuffy") McInnis of the Philadelphia Athletics. The story illustrates **early 20th-century baseball culture**: McInnis overhears a stranger at training camp insulting him, then later confronts the man sarcastically, prompting his embarrassed exit. The narrative then shifts to a Philadelphia Giants encounter where player Fred Tenny responds to "Big Chief" Meyers' dismissive comments about left-handed ("south-paw") players. The humor relies on **localized baseball gossip** and player personalities recognizable to contemporary readers—particularly figures in Connie Mack's Athletics organization and John McGraw's Giants. The punchline about "nuts" (crazy people) and the implied comeuppance of the insults would have amused readers familiar with these rival teams' competitive dynamics. The page is otherwise filled with period advertisements for medical liniments, hotels, and watches.

GOEWEY John McInnis, Philadelphia Americans 'OHN (‘‘STUFFY"’) McINNIS, one of the few remaining parts of Connie Mack’s once famous baseball machine, tells this good story concerning the period directly preceding his advent as one of the Athletics’ stars: ‘‘On the evening of the day when the team arrived at the training camp, a stran- ger came into the hotel, and after looking at the register turned to the clerk and said, ‘I see Connie has got that kid McInnis with him. Say, that youth has a crust trying to play first after Davis! He'll make a fine mess of trying to hold down that bag.’ “I stood there listening to the compli- ments, and before the clerk could crawl under the counter said, ‘You're right. I've often wondered why Mack selected such a dub to cover such an important post. I know McInnis pretty well, and he’s a base- ball joke.’ Just then one of the boys came along and called me by name, and the stranger, with a face which bore a close resemblance to a boiled lobster, made a wild break through a near-by door and was gone. “One day in Philadelphia, when the Giants arrived in town just before we were to take a train, I went over to a hotel not far from the station, to talk with some of my friends among the McGrawites. While the boys were discussing various baseball topics, the subject turned to left-handed players, and ‘Big Chief’ Meyers remarked, ‘All these south-paws are loose in the bel- fry. I never met a port-sider in my life who wasn’t a nut.’ “Near by Fred Tenny, who throws from the off side, was standing, and as the Indian looked toward him, he grinned and asked, ‘How about me, Chief?’ **Meyers was flustered, but game, and he stammered, ‘Well, Fred, you're not so much of a nut as some.’ "* So Sanitary ‘HE Thompsons had a terrier, The terrier had fleas; The poor dog grew so restless that They feared some strange disease.
