That is one of sev- eral reasons why I am not qualified to criticise it. . Critics tell me it is difficult to review books properly if you read them. You should only ‘‘sense’’ a book by glancing gently at the illustrations or going out and playing golf. You can then review it with perfect impartiality. Obviously that’s impossible in the pres- ent instance. As I had to write Payson’s novel for him, as well as read it, I am biased. To me it’s the most unusual ‘*war book’? that has yet appeared. It gives a bird's-eye view of the world-wide warfare of married life. The book is lightly written, but if its deeper meanings prove a help to wabbly married couples, I believe the author will feel rewarded, whether or not the royalties are as big as he devoutly hopes.
