They were royally entertained. They elected to go to San Francisco next year, and to assist that end made Fred Schaefer sec- retary-treasurer, as that is his habitat. Ted Robinson, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, was elected president, and Dixon Merritt, who made a gallant effort to in- duce the boys to visit Nashville next year, but was again put on the waiting list, was elected vice-president. The convention, wich headquarters at the Hotel Statler, was attended by about sixty, including the ladies, and from first to last was busy. The entertainment in- cluded an auto trip to the famous War- rensville Farm; a get-together dinner by the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, with a greeting by Mayor Baker; a trip to Cedar Point, on Lake Erie, as guests of the Cleveland and Buffalo Transit Com- pany; an auto trip to the country estate of Charles A. Otis and the farm of Elbert H. Baker, and later to the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club, the Cleveland Automobile Club furnishing cars for the occasion. A stag dinner and ‘‘stunt’’ night at the Hermit Club was notably successful. Visits to the Country Club, to Nela Park, the unique plant of the National Electric Lamp Company, Euclid Beach and other places were greatly enjoyed. A banquet tendered by the Cleveland Advertising Club at the Statler was a fitting close to one of the busiest days, After the annual business meeting of the humorists on Friday, another automo- bile trip was enjoyed, and the official banquet of the humorists took place in the evening. Entertainment for Satur- day was tendered by the City Club and by Mr. John Sherwin. The meeting was exceptional in comradeship as well as in the compliment paid to Cleveland, for this is the only city that has had an op- portunity to entertain the humorists on two occasions. George Fitch, Eddie Guest, Strickland Gillilan, Ted Robinson, Edmund Vance Cooke, William Ganson Rose, John W. Carey, J. U. Higinbotham, Charley Leedy, W. R. Rose, Fred Schaefer and others of “‘the bunch” gave quid pro quo, as is their habit. Any city that secures the humor- ists as guests always falls into the habit of self-congratulation in the premises and yearns for their reappearance.
