What you’re looking at

This page contains two distinct humorous stories: **"Lincoln's Chin-fly Story"** presents a tall tale attributed to Abraham Lincoln illustrating that adversity drives productivity. A lazy mule works energetically only when bothered by a chin-fly; when a farmer kills the fly to "help," the mule stops working entirely. The moral: problems, however annoying, serve a purpose. The upper text appears to be a dialogue about receiving mail in remote locations, referencing Theodore Roosevelt and a charitable figure (likely Dr. Grenfell, who worked in Labrador). The joke climaxes with Roosevelt claiming he received a letter addressed only with eyeglasses and teeth—suggesting such absurdist mail delivery is unremarkable compared to other unlikely occurrences. The page is primarily **advertisements** for diamonds, cocktails, liquid pistol toys, and tailoring services—typical Judge magazine revenue. The small cartoons accompanying the stories are generic comedic illustrations rather than pointed political satire. This appears a lighter entertainment-focused issue rather than one emphasizing political commentary.

brow, ‘‘yes, indeed, madam! It seems very strange and very uncomfortable, I assure you! I think I should hardly have lasted this hot day except for a letter from Labrador I got this morning. This did sound cool, at least. Besides telling me of the icebergs and things, it inquired when I was to return and where a letter would surely reach me. But, really, you know, I never can say where I shall be. I remember once, in speaking with Mr. Roosevelt at Oyster Bay, I happened to draw out of my pocket a letter which had reached me that very day from one of my aids. It was addressed facetiously, ‘Dr. Grenfell, God-knows-where, America.’ The chap, you see, knew I was off somewhere try- ing to get money from the rich to edu- cate Labrador’s poor. I asked the colonel if he didn’t think it most ex- traordinary that I actually got it. And his reply was, ‘Why, that is nothing, doctor, nothing at all! I can beat your experience. I got a letter not long ago with no address at all on it—it had sim- ply a pair of eyeglasses and a set of teeth!?'"” Lincoln's Chin-fly Story. A certain amount of trouble is a good thing. Lincoln used to illustrate the point with a story about a ‘‘chin-fly."” It seems that once a man was plowing with a very lazy mule. Suddenly the mule lifted its head, switched its stump of a tail, and went across the field at a rapid walk and with most unusual energy. Reaching the end of the row, there was a man on the fence. When the mule and man came up, the fellow got down, walked over to the mule, and hit him a slap on the jaw, at the same time remarking, ‘Well, I killed him that time!” “Killed what?” “Why, that chin-fly!’’ “Well, you interfering fool, I wish you would mind your own business! That chin-fly ~as the only thing that made this mule go!’’ DIAMONDS ON CRE CAL 20%* DOWN—-10% PER MONTH Why wait for your Diamond until you have saved the price? Pay for it by the Lyon Method.
