What you’re looking at

This page is primarily **advertisements** with one notable satirical article. The main content is "**Dockstader Craves Votes**," a humorous piece about **Lew Dockstader** (a well-known vaudeville performer/comedian of the era), who jokingly announces his candidacy for office. The satire mocks politicians' empty promises: he pledges hospitals and equal wages for women, then undercuts himself with a crass joke—suggesting men needn't fear women voting because "we don't have to count them, do we?" The separate anecdote, "**Jim Hill Didn't Count**," is a darker joke about railroad magnate **James J. Hill**. A photographer deliberately excludes the elderly Hill from a group portrait, callously remarking he only wanted "live ones." The pun—that Hill "didn't count"—suggests he's already dead or irrelevant. Both pieces use cynical humor about exclusion and invisibility: the first satirizes political indifference toward women; the second mocks age and irrelevance in the business world. The page otherwise contains hotel and product advertisements typical of the era.

ACCOMPANIED by his secretary and certain railroad representatives, James J. Hill had gone into the far West to inspect a new trunk line, When their private car had been side. tracked in one of those famous Rocky Mountain canyons, the tourists debarked for the purpose of beholding some spe. cial feat of engineering adroitness which there obtained. A photographer from a near camp, scenting a generous fee, soon had the party lined up against the rocks, Mr, Hill standing at the extreme right of the group and his secretary at the left, according to the arrangements of the camera operator, a lantern-jawed moun- taineer, who proceeded in leisurely fash- ion to make a time exposure. Next day Mr. Hill peretary glanced his eyes over the picture and noted with some concern that the familiar figure of his employer was missing from tke group. He demanded to know why the photographer had made such a blunder. “Haw, haw laughed the Western artist. ‘That ain't no blunder, mister! I only wanted to take the live ones, That old feller with side whi: end didn’t count, so I left him out!" —Harratd Stine Dockstader Craves Votes. A New Candidate. Lew Dockstader dropped in to the National Press Club the other night and was called upon for a speech. “Twill accept the nomination if itis tendered to me,’’ Mr. Dockstader said in part. ‘I will do anything I can for your votes, and in order that there may be no misunderstanding I wish to say at the outset that I crave your votes—I crave them, I crawl for them. If 1am elected, I will do a lot for the District of Columbia. “T will use my influence to give the district a hospital that it will be a pleasure to die in. At the earliest pos- sible moment after my inauguration, I shall have the spokesman of my adminis- tration introduce a bill providing equal wages for women. Consider the deplor- able condition that exists to-day, when fifty per cent. of the women who are working for a living do not earn half enough money to support their husbands! “Let the women vote! Let them, I say! In opposing woman suffrage, we men are cowards. What have we to fear? Suppose they do vote. We don’t have to count them, do we?” } Mr. Dockstader also outlined his views on the initiative and referendum. Despite all reports to the contrary, bis hat is in the ring.—New York Times.
