What you’re looking at

This page contains political satire from an unclear date. The main cartoon "Vice-President Shera'n's Badge—Insurgents, Please Take Notice" depicts a figure wearing a badge labeled with text about being "a genuine republican" and "holding office," surrounded by thorny vegetation. This appears to satirize Vice-President James Sherman's political position during the Progressive/"Insurgent" Republican split of the early 1900s. The other content includes discussions about kissing customs, caricature studies, and plain-clothes police identification. The "Dolliver's Reflection" cartoon references Republican party politics but lacks sufficient context for precise interpretation. The overall page blends political commentary with social satire typical of Judge's format.

JUDGE PUBLISHED WEEKLY LESLIE-JUODGE COMPANY Sleicher, Presi Arthur Terry, Treasurer. e, Managing Editor. ton, Art Edlito To Kiss or Not To Kiss. [7 HAS been hard sledding for the time-honored kiss- ing custom these scientific times. When the doctors an- nounced that the nurse who had the baby out for an airing should not permit every ad- miring passer-by to give the helpless little creature a re- sounding smack, we echoed hearty approval; but when they tried to put the same embargo on every fellow and his sweetheart, the bacteria experts reckoned without their host. Among the more enlightened, the promiscu- ous kissing of infants has probably fallen off; but as to what has been the effect upon benighted couples when the parlor light burns low, we have no reliable statistics upon which to base a conclusion. In denouncing the hoary custom of ki ing, science performed only half of its task. In order, therefore, that the course of true JUDGE love might run hygienically as well as smoothly, Professor Harry Butler, of the National Pharmaceutical Society, has in- vented a patent, germ-proof, osculatory gauze screen. It can be carried conven- iently in the pocket, ready for use on a mo- ment’s notice, and can even be scented to please the individual taste of the users. But on what moral grounds did the professor patent so beneficent adevice? If designed to meet a universal need, to be a world-wide blessing, to give health and happiness to all who possess it, it should never have been put under the restriction of a patent. Yet what's the use, after all, of an anti- septic, scented, germ-proof, patent, oscula- tory screen of gauze, since Harvard Uni- versity has put her official O. K. on the kissing habit in the case of healthy, well- intentioned couples? Says Professor Worth- ington, a bacterial expert of the Medical School: ‘* Kissing harmful? Certainly not! ting the bacterial balance. Perhaps the only serious danger springing from such a union would affect the heart only."’ Here is a learned doctor and the people's true friend! We have noticed that Harvard Medical is stealing some of the best professors from a sister institution, and have heard rumors that she hopes to outclass Johns Hopkins. In the opinion of ‘* His Honor,"’ this decision of Professor Worthington sets the final seal upon Harvard’s superiority and vindicates her genuine democracy as a university. Judge’s Caricature Studies. UDGE wants to call the at- tention of art students to the series of earicaturestudies now running in‘* His Honor's"” columns. As a caricaturist Zim has no superior, and these studies from his pen are well worth pre- serving. Asa matter of fact, the feature DOLLIVER'S REFLECTION. "I refuse to be driven out of the Republican party."" No, sir! There is no possible reason in the world or proof in the world why, when two self-respecting, wholesome persons meet lip to lip, they can't break away without upset- VICE-PRESIDENT SHER AN'S BADGE—INSURGENTS, PLEASE TAKE NOTICE was started in response to many letters requesting that Jupce show in comparison the photograph and the caricature. Many who are not art students are cutting out these caricature studies and pasting the same in an album. One subscriber has giv- en his album the following title: “ Promi- nent Americans in Photograph and Carica- ture"? The title is not copyrighted. Known by Their Dress. LAIN-CLOTHES men have been abol- ished by the New York police commis- sioner. This is a great relief to those of us who have hitherto been suspected of being policemen, It is now possible to tell the difference between an officer and a gentle- man. By the way, who ever saw any plain clothes on those plain-clothes men? As we recall them, they resembled a sartorian erup- tion more than anything else, with their fancy waistcoats, reverberant neckties, and large-check trousers. Good for Arizona and New Mexico! They are welcome to the starry galaxy upon our banners, especially Arizona. Jupce always had a warm regard for Yuma.
