This page is primarily **advertising**, with one brief satirical section titled "Judge's Idle Hour." The main content is the "Idle Hour" column, which publishes reader letters mocking social issues: 1. **First letter**: A teacher-in-training complains that her curriculum wastes time on impractical subjects (dissecting grasshoppers, studying worm digestion) instead of practical education for making a living. The satire targets overly theoretical education. 2. **Second item**: A joke about modernizing the biblical Jonah story—a Chicago pastor claims the whale was actually an "apartment whale" with modern conveniences like electricity, satirizing how people rationalize ancient religious texts through contemporary technology. 3. **Third letter**: A testimonial (likely tongue-in-cheek) about a woman who switched from coffee to Postum cereal drink and supposedly recovered her health. The advertisements throughout promote liqueur, tobacco, pianos, insurance, and ale—typical period products. The page reflects early-20th-century concerns about education reform and consumer culture.

Sth Ave. 224 St. IR—I have been a reader of your great paper for years. 1 am a pupil in the New York Training School for Teachers, and_am dissatisfied, as are most of the pupils there. Please let us have some ideas concerning the same from some of the parents, Poor girls! Practical edu- cation means such instruction as shall en- able people to make a competent living. It is not necessary that every one should know all the minute details of logic, as- tronomy, mineralogy, chemistry, biology, physiology, mathematics, Latin, Greek, history, geography, kindergarten meth- ods, philosophy, two methods in pho- netics, zodlogy, etc. We are expected to know something of everything. We have wasted hours on such important matters as the internal functions of the grass- hopper, the nervous system of the frog, the digestive system of the earth-worm, whether cats think, making whips, play- ing with cards and writing fairy tales. Last week two girls fainted because a jar filled with hearts, lights, livers, etc., was placed before us and each one had to ex- amine them, What relation have pre- served organs to teaching primary chil- dren? Why so much deep physiology ? Let us learn what is necessary.—" Dis- heartened Student” in New York Trib- | une. MODERNIZING JONAH’S WHALE, A Chicago pastor says he believes the Jonah-and-the-whale story because the whale could have been an apartment whale, planned expressly for its single tenant. The pastor intimates that Jonah’s pri- vate cabin was fitted up with all the mod- ern conveniences, including electricity, a Suggestion that would seem to throw a new light on the log of the unpopular voyager. At the same time it will be difficult to picture Jonah lounging com- fortably in an easy-chair, intent upon the WENT TO TEA AND IT WOUND HER BOBBIN. Tea-drinking frequently affects people as badly as coffee. A lady in Salisbury, Maryland, says that she was compelled to abandon the use of coffee a good many years ago, because it threatened to ruin her health, and that she went over to tea- drinking, but finally she had dyspepsia so bad that she had lost twenty-five pounds and no food seemed to agree with her. & She further says: * At this time I was induced to take up the famous food drink, Postum, and was so much pleased with the results that I have never been without it since. I commenced to improve at once, regained my twenty-five pounds of flesh’ and went some beyond my usual weight. “L know Postum to be good, pure, and healthful, and there never was an article, and never will be, I believe, that does so surely take the place of coffee as Pos- tum Food Coffee. The beauty of it all is that it is satisfying and wonderfully nour- ishing. 1 feel as it I could not sing its praises too loud.” Read ** The Road to Wellville,” in packages. “ There's a Rea- son.” HENRY LINDENMEYR & SONS PAPER WAREHOUSE Nos 2,24, and 38 Ieecker Street Branch Wi Weekman Street, bier York TLL kinbe OF PAPER MADE TO ORD! side of the whale at the inquisitive rubber |nymic at present current number of The Clam Rake, or staring curiously through a pane in the| fish. No; it’s really asking too much of us. We prefer to think of Jonah as cabined in an oily and smelly crevice, cribbed by arching whalebone and smothery blub- ber, and gasping for the feel of the solid earth again as the mighty fish rolls from | side to side or plunges head downward into the ocean depths. ‘There's no use in telling us that Sam- son had taken physical-culture lessons, or | that the children in the fiery furnace | wore asbestos garments. We have our own ideas on these sub- jects, and it will require more than one| Chicago preacher to make us believe that Jonah ever traveled first-class when he went whaling.— Cleveland Plain Dealer, HOW THE VILLAGE PROGRESSED. “Well, well !" exclaimed the man w! had wandered back to the village. *So the Eagle House is still the Eagle House ?
