What you’re looking at

This page from Judge magazine (satirical weekly) primarily consists of **humorous essays about women and money**, not political cartoons. The main pieces mock the supposed paradox of women's relationship with finances: 1. **"The Way of a Woman"** satirizes female irrationality about money through two anecdotes: a suicide note prioritizing bean dinner instructions, and an accident victim refusing help because she feared losing $36 hidden in her stocking. The joke: women claim they can't manage finances, yet obsess over saving money in absurd ways. 2. **"A Woman's Account-Book"** ridicules wives' bookkeeping attempts—meticulous initially, then abandoned—suggesting women cannot maintain financial records. The satire reflects early-20th-century gender stereotypes: women portrayed as simultaneously careless spenders and compulsive hoarders, driven by illogical priorities. The page is predominantly filled with period advertisements (Parker's Tar Soap, Williams' Shaving Soap, Sohmer Pianos), making content placement secondary to revenue.

THE WAY OF A WOMAN. Woman and money. What a combi- nation! Why this sunject should bob up in the spring of the year is a mystery. Ve cannot say personally by what line of suggestion it has arrived in our thought. Perhaps this little story is ac- countable for it: A Jersey woman com- mitted suicide. It will be admitted that this is a serious step for any woman to} In order to come at the point we} ¢ in mind, try to realize the predica- tof this woman as she planned this rt cut from the now to the henceforth, She arranged, we will say, to have the performance come off in ‘the evening. Naturally she was full of preparations during the day. Last of all, she wrote a letter and laid it upon the table where her husband would find it. Now, what do you suppose occurred to this woman s the first and most necessary thing to siy to the husband she was leaving ? We are willing to wager the fortune of Mr. Andrew Carnegie, if Mr. Andrew Carnegie will loan us his fortune for a few days for that purpose, that you can- not guess in a hundred years, unless you | be have read the story, what this woman said in her farewell note to her husband. To satisfy your curiosity, we will tell you at she said. The first line of her mor- wary leave-taking was this: © The beans | are in the oven and done, so you can eat them. Good-bye, sweetheart.” WOMAN AND MONEY. That's what we mean when we say that woman is a mystery. Now, money is likewise a mystery, and when you join woman and money in a single concept, you are just mixing one impenetrable mnystery with another mystery equally im- penctrable, Here is another story. A girl is run over by a wagon ina New York street. She lay stone-still where the wagon left her, and though she was evidently suffer- | ing, she warned from her with mandatory gestures, and a hushed crescendo of shrieks, every man who tried to aid her. Finally an ambulance came, and she per- mitted herself to be lifted into the rescue- buggy, begged to be allowed her privacy ‘a moment, then startled the physician by rising to her feet, leaping out of the ainbulance, and disappearing in the crowd, What could explain this woman's queer actions? It was all very simple. She herself confided it in a whisper to the physician as she hustled forth to liberty. She had thirty-six dollars in her stocking. She had refused to budge for fear the money had been torn loose and might For Dandruff and Baldness. Packers Tar Soap Pure as the Pines An Ideal Shampoo with healing and antiseptic properties. Having ascertained that the money was safe, she laughed at her pain and fled. And yet there are men mean enough to say that women are not saving in money matters. ‘A WOMAN'S ACCOUNT-BOOK. Did any of JUDGE'S married male rea ers ever have experience with their wives’ account-books ? If they didn’t, they have missed one of the real pleasures of this prosaic old world. Give a young married woman an account-book, two dollars, and a lead-pencil, and she will perform won- ders. That account-book will begin as bravely as every mercantile ledger be- gan. precise and painful accuracy, will be set down, ‘+ One sack salt, 5 cents, Three cukes, 10 cents, One pound bacon, 14 cents, One chicken, 78 cents. The next. day another entry will be made, and the next. Then it will occur to that woman that she left out forty-four things on the first day, and they wiil all duly entered, interlined, crisscrossed up and down the margins, and every way. By the fourth day she will go over to a neighbor's to spend an hour, and| there she will find a new recipe for put. | ting an appliqué on a dimity shirt-waist. The next entry in the account-book, fol- lowing six bars of soap, will be this new recipe, and then there will be a four- months’ interregnum, during which, as it might seem to a later historian, that fam- | ily subsisted on atmosphere and the cool night dews. Then some day her con- | science will smite her and she will re- sume the account-book with another six bars of soap, leaving the broad inference that, after having had nothing to eat for six months, they have now feasted on, those six bars of soap. A WOMAN AND $10. You give a woman ten dollars, and then borrow seventy-two cents from her FOUND OUT. A TRAINED NURSE DISCOVERED ITS EFFECT, No one is in better position to know the value of food and drink than a trained urse. | Speaking of coffee, a nurse of Wilkes- barre, Pa., writes: “I used to drink strong coffee myself and suffered greatly from headaches and indigestion. While on a visit to my brothers | had a good chance to try Postum Food Coffee, for they drank it altogether in place of ordi- nary coffee, In two weeks, alter using Postum, I found I was much benefited and finally my headaches disappeared and also the indigestion. “ Naturally I have since used Postum among my patients, and have noticed a |marked benefit where coffee has been | left off and Postum used. “T observe a curious fact about Pos- tum used among mothers, It greatly the flow of milk in cases where helps |coffee is inclined to dry it up, and where tea causes nervousness. “T find trouble in getting servants to make Postum properly. Two days later you casually inquire what has be- come of the ten dollars. She tells you she has not had ten dollars. You waive the question whether she ever had ten dollars, and ask her if she has ten dollars now, and finally get a reluctant admis- sion that she is penniless. Then you fol- low up the inquiry and discover that she has bought notuing. Then you are ready with the final charge: What, then, did you do with the ten doliars?” and that blessed woman will come back at you like this: “ You gave me ten dollars and then borrowed it back.” That is the way your seventy-two cents becomes a boom- erang that smashes you and your ten dollars to smithereens, And yet, in spite of all, that same woman will hang on to ninety-nine cents, and get more out of it, and make it do more things, and spread | —— it round over more clothes, and keep it simmering like a bubbling spring — in short, take her all in all, a woman is the master financier of the world.
