What you’re looking at

This page is primarily **advertising and light humor pieces** rather than political satire. The main content consists of: **"A Changed Father"** — A gentle joke about a portrait painter: a man commissions a portrait of his deceased father, citing the artist's ability to paint the long-dead Moses. When finished, the man tearfully says his father "has changed" — the humor being the absurdity of expecting accuracy in portraying someone the artist never saw. **"Katie's Answer"** — An Irish-dialect love poem describing a courtship, written in the sentimental style typical of period magazines. The remainder is **advertisements** for various products: Kodak cameras, Sohmer pianos, Packer's Tar Soap, Youmans hats, perfume/toiletries, and cigarettes. The page contains **no significant political content or social commentary**. It reflects late-19th/early-20th-century consumer culture and light entertainment typical of Judge's mixed advertising-and-humor format.

JUDGE A CHANGED PATHER. A man once called on a porttait-painter and asked him to paint his father. “* But where is your father 2" asked he of the brush. “Oh, he died ten years ago. “« Then how can ‘paint him?” asked the artist. “Why,” was the reply, ‘I have just seen your por- trait of Moses. Surely, if you can paint the portrait of a man who died thousands of years ago, you can more easily paint the portrait of my father, who has been dead only ten years." Seeing the sort of man with whom he had to deal, the artist undertook the work. When the picture was finished, the newly-blossomed art-patron was called in to see it. He gazed at it in silence for some time, his eyes filling with tears, and softly and reverently ‘he said, ‘'So that is my father. Ah, how he is changed !" When Baby was sick, we gave her Castoria.
