The Comic Brush: Edo & Meiji

Legendary Scene in a Cavern (triptych)

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi · Meiji era, c. 1870s–1880s

Three sheets open onto a cavern of gray rock. At the left a noblewoman in yellow and crimson robes gestures toward the center, an attendant crouched behind her. There an aged man in a purple mantle rises out of the stone, white-bearded and gaunt, a bare skeleton laid at his feet. The right panel crowds with an old warrior in armor among a cluster of severed heads and demon faces, a block of text set into the sky beside them. Yoshitoshi builds the drama from contrast: courtly silk against bone, a still central figure against the turmoil at the edges. A printed passage carries the narrative the pictures dramatize. Whatever the exact legend, the sheet works as sequential storytelling spread across one wide field.
