Sure Shot Seth

· December 21, 1897

Sure Shot Seth, the Boy Rifleman: or, The Young Patriots of the North by Oll Coomes is a historical adventure serial set during the American Civil War. In August 1862, near the Minnesota River, young spy Seth discovers a clandestine meeting between three Sioux chiefs—Little Crow, Inkpaduta, and Little Priest—and a Confederate agent. The agent seeks to enlist the tribes against the Union, offering territorial concessions. Seth kills the boatman Serleque, assumes his identity, and ferries the conspirators to an island where he overhears them agree to launch an Indian massacre. After the chiefs depart, Serleque, having survived, emerges from the water seeking revenge. Seth and the wounded warrior engage in a desperate hand-to-hand struggle in the river. Seth's companions, including a youth nicknamed Beaver, attempt rescue as the combatants drift downstream into darkness.
