The Boy Bugler in Cuba; or, The Cowboy Clan on Deck by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. This dime novel follows the Agramonte family and their connection to a Texas-based secret vigilante organization called the Cowboys' Secret League. The narrative establishes backstory: Rafael Agramonte, son of a Cuban independence fighter, lost his father in an Indian raid and created the League to protect border ranchmen. His younger brother Harry serves as the League's courier and bugler. Rafael married Cuban-born Stella Aguilar and returned to Cuba, while Charlie Chase, a former U.S. Navy officer and Texas rancher, now captains the League. The story opens with Harry sounding the alarm bugle to summon League members, having learned his brother Rafael is imprisoned by Spanish forces in Cuba, his sister Lucita has disappeared, and his sister-in-law faces danger.
