The Frontier Angel: A Romance of Kentucky Rangers' Life by Edward S. Ellis, the featured serial in this March 1902 issue of Beadle's Half-Dime Library. The narrative opens in western Pennsylvania near the Ohio River, where farmer Abbot prepares to send his daughter Marian west by flatboat to Kentucky with neighbors. Marian's betrothed, Russel Mansfield, must remain briefly with his own parents. A dark threat looms: Tom McGable, a rejected suitor whom Marian spurned, has reportedly turned renegade, allied with Indians and British forces, committing atrocities along the Ohio River and vowing vengeance. After a farewell evening and storm, the flatboat departs with eighteen settlers. The second chapter details the journey's beginning and includes warnings from a passing hunter about dangers ahead.
