This January 1962 British edition of Analog Science Fact & Fiction contains multiple works of science fiction. The lead serial is "Sense of Obligation" by Harry Harrison, part one of three, which follows protagonist Brion Brandd through the climactic final round of a martial competition called "the Twenties"—a month-long contest combining physical and mental challenges including fencing, chess, and other disciplines. Exhausted after weeks of continuous combat, Brion faces his final opponent, the formidable red-haired swordsman Irolg, while haunted by a mysterious midnight visitor who had sought him out despite competition rules. Additional content includes novelettes "The Blaze of Noon" by Randall Garrett and Avram Davidson, and "Modus Vivendi" by Walter Bupp; short stories by Donald E. Westlake and Darrel T. Langart; and editor John W. Campbell's editorial essay on the distinction between science fiction and science fantasy, using examples from aeronautical history and interplanetary travel.
