Münchener Bilderbogen No. 286

Four hand-coloured vignettes read left to right across a single broadsheet, each panel separated by a column of German text rather than ruled borders — an arrangement typical of the Münchener Bilderbogen series that Braun & Schneider issued for fifty years. In the first panel a dog and a dark-painted figure tussle; the second shows a woman upending a bucket over a stooped child; the third, a figure wielding a broom in mid-swing; the fourth, an adult thrashing a boy with a cane. The draftsmanship is confident and fluid, figures caught in mid-action with exaggerated posture. These Munich picture-sheets — distributed cheaply across German-speaking Europe — were among the direct ancestors of the modern comic strip, teaching storytelling through sequential images a generation before Outcault or Töpffer reached mass audiences.
