Yoshiyuki Sadamoto
b. 1962
Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, born January 29, 1962, in Tokuyama (now Shunan), Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, is a character designer, manga artist, and a founding member of the Gainax anime studio. He is best known for his character designs for the landmark anime series *Neon Genesis Evangelion* and for adapting that series into a long-running manga, which he both wrote and illustrated. Sadamoto's artistic style is marked by clean, expressive linework and a subtle, naturalistic approach to character emotion, often focusing on the inner lives of young protagonists. His key collaborators include Hideaki Anno, with whom he worked closely on *Evangelion*, and other Gainax figures like Kazuya Tsurumaki. In addition to *Evangelion*, he contributed character designs for *Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water* and *FLCL*. The *Neon Genesis Evangelion* manga, which he began in 1994 and concluded in 2013, became a major success in its own right, running for fourteen volumes and earning him an Eisner Award nomination. Sadamoto's later career includes work on the *Evangelion* rebuild films and occasional illustration projects. He remains a respected figure in both manga and anime, celebrated for his quiet, humanistic touch in character creation.
