Luciano Bottaro
Luciano Bottaro (16 November 1931 – 25 November 2006) was an Italian comic book artist best known for his long run on Disney's *Topolino* (the Italian *Mickey Mouse*). Born in Rapallo, he began his career in the 1950s, drawing from a deep well of early comic influences—Otto Messmer's *Felix the Cat*, Winsor McCay's *Little Nemo*, Frederick Burr Opper's *Happy Hooligan*, and Rudolph Dirks's *Katzenjammer Kids*—as well as the Disney adaptations of Carl Barks and Floyd Gottfredson. Bottaro’s style was clean, expressive, and buoyant, perfectly suited for the whimsical world of Disney ducks and mice. He collaborated frequently with writer Carlo Chendi, and together they co-created the popular Italian Disney character **Pippo** (Goofy’s alter ego) and the mischievous pirate **Paperinik** (Duck Avenger). Bottaro was also a prolific contributor to *Il Giornalino*, *Pepito*, and *Pepito Magazine*, and his work appeared in *Almanacco Topolino* and *I Classici di Walt Disney*. His legacy endures as a cornerstone of Italian Disney comics, and his playful, energetic linework influenced generations of European cartoonists. He received the **Yellow Kid Award** for his contributions to comics.
