Johnny Ryan
1970–
Johnny Ryan was born John F. Ryan IV on November 30, 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts. He is an alternative cartoonist, writer, and animator best known for his deliberately crude and confrontational style, a direct descendant of the underground comix tradition. His most famous creation is *Angry Youth Comix*, a series published by Fantagraphics, and its spin-off character Blecky Yuckerella, a strip that began in the *Portland Mercury* and later moved online. Ryan’s work—which he typically writes, draws, inks, letters, and colors—aims for maximum shock and irreverence, with titles like *Prison Pit* and *The Collected Angry Youth Comix* extending his signature grotesque humor. He also co-created the Nickelodeon animated series *Pig Goat Banana Cricket* with Dave Cooper and served as story editor for *Looney Tunes Cartoons*. His credits span 49 issues between 2000 and 2024, including contributions to *Vice* and *Hate Annual*. Ryan remains active, continuing to push boundaries in both print and animation.
