Det gick många rykten om gubben Whateley: att han höll på med magi, att kan köpte kor som bara försvann och att han ständigt byggde ut sitt hus. Lika mystisk var hans dotterson Wilbur, som efter morfaderns död börjar leta efter boken Necronomicon. Wilbur dör i ett försök att stjäla boken från professor Armitage, och man upptäcker då att Wilbur bara var till hälften mänsklig. Professorn läser Wilburs dagböcker och inser att familjen Whateley försökt åkalla de gamla gudarna. Han reser med sina assistenter till Dunwich för att stoppa planen och dödar ett oformligt monster – Wilburs tvillingbror.
