Enrique Alcatena
1957–
Enrique Alcatena, also known as Quique Alcatena in his native Argentina and across Latin America, was born on 26 February 1957. He is best known for his intricate, detailed artwork in both American and European comics, often blending fantasy, horror, and science fiction with a distinctive, almost baroque linework. Alcatena entered the comics industry in the late 1970s, steadily building a reputation for atmospheric, densely rendered pages. His signature style—marked by elaborate cross-hatching, ornate backgrounds, and a moody chiaroscuro—made him a sought-after artist for dark fantasy and sword-and-sorcery tales. He collaborated frequently with writers such as John Ostrander on *Hawkworld* and *Empire of Blood*, and with Alan Grant on various projects, including *The Crunch* and *Starblazer*. Among his notable co-creations is the series *Gespenster Geschichten*, a German horror anthology. Alcatena’s later career saw continued work in European albums and Argentine comics, maintaining a devoted following for his meticulous, painterly approach. While he has not received major mainstream awards, his influence endures among fans of detailed, atmospheric fantasy art.
