Denis Gifford was a British writer, artist, and historian whose work shaped the understanding of British comics and film. Born on 26 December 1927, he began his career as a cartoonist and comic artist in the 1940s, drawing humor strips across genres like superhero, Western, science fiction, and adventure for numerous British titles through the 1960s. His artistic credits include work on *Félix le chat*, *Space Comics*, *Illustrierte Klassiker* (Classics Illustrated), *Captain Universe*, and the UK edition of *Classics Illustrated*.

Gifford’s deeper impact came as a historian. He authored over fifty books on popular media, compiled the first comprehensive catalogue of every comic ever published in the UK, and produced the first price guide for British comics. His vast personal collection—perhaps the world’s largest of British comics—underpinned his research into early film and comics history, where he uncovered countless lost films and identified uncredited creators. He also compiled detailed filmographies of all traceable fiction, nonfiction, and animated films released in the UK, as well as early US animation.

Beyond writing and drawing, Gifford worked in broadcasting, devising and contributing to radio and television programs, and directed several short films. His reference works remain foundational for academic study. He died on 18 May 2000, leaving a legacy as a meticulous chronicler of British popular culture.
