Bernie Mireault
1961–2024
Bernie Mireault was a Canadian cartoonist best known for his long-running creator-owned series *The Jam*, a surreal superhero comedy, and for his frequent collaborations with writer Matt Wagner on the *Grendel* universe. Born Bernard Edward Mireault on June 27, 1961, in Canada, he began his comics career in the mid-1980s, bringing a loose, expressive line and a playful sense of design to his work. He served as artist, inker, colorist, and letterer across numerous *Grendel* titles, including *Grendel: War Child*, *Grendel Tales: The Devil in Our Midst*, and *The Devil Inside*, helping to define the visual identity of that sprawling saga. His own creation, *The Jam*, a madcap series about a hapless superhero, ran for many years and showcased his gift for absurdist humor and inventive page layouts. Mireault also contributed to *Cartoon Network Presents*, adapting animated properties into comics. He remained active in the industry until 2017, leaving behind a body of work that balanced mainstream genre work with deeply personal, offbeat storytelling. He passed away in September 2024.
