Alex Varenne
Alex Varenne was a French comic book artist and writer best known for his erotic graphic novels, often created in collaboration with his brother, Daniel Varenne. Born on 29 August 1939 in France, Varenne’s career in comics spanned from 1980 to 2021, during which he contributed as an artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across 36 issues. His most credited works include *Erma Jaguar*, *Ardeur*, and *L'Immanquable Hors-Série*, as well as contributions to *Serie Modern*, *Arboris Exclusief*, and *Kiro*. Varenne’s style was distinctive for its lush, detailed linework and sensual, often provocative themes, which made him a notable figure in European adult comics. He frequently partnered with his brother Daniel, a writer, on many projects, blending narrative and visual storytelling to create immersive, erotically charged worlds. Varenne died on 19 October 2020. His legacy endures as a key creator in the realm of erotic bande dessinée, influencing later artists with his bold, unapologetic approach to adult themes. While he did not receive major mainstream awards, his work remains celebrated among fans of the genre for its artistic ambition and collaborative spirit.
