Who is The Scarecrow?

The Scarecrow is Marvel's comic-book adaptation of L. Frank Baum's beloved character from Oz — a straw-stuffed figure who joins Dorothy Gale, the Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Woodman on their journey, longing above all else for a brain.

Straight from the Golden Age of comics, The Scarecrow made his four-color debut in The Funnies #38 in 1939, bringing the beloved straw-stuffed dreamer of Oz to the comic book page at the very dawn of the medium's classic era. Over a remarkable stretch spanning more than seven decades, this iconic figure has wandered through Marvel's adaptations of Oz alongside Dorothy Gale, The Cowardly Lion, The Tin Woodman, and faithful little Toto — and in a wonderfully unexpected turn, even shares pages with Donatello in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. With a key issue among his appearances and a publishing history that runs all the way to 2015, The Scarecrow is a charming reminder that comics have always drawn from the richest wells of imagination — and that some characters are simply timeless.
