Who Is Batman's Greatest Villain?

Batman's rogues' gallery is one of the greatest in comics, but the Joker is almost universally considered his greatest villain. Their rivalry is the ultimate hero-villain foil: Batman's order vs. the Joker's chaos, first introduced way back in Batman #1 (1940). Beyond the Joker, Batman has a spectacular lineup of iconic foes — Two-Face, the Riddler, the Penguin, Ra's al Ghul, Bane (who famously broke Batman's back in Knightfall), Mr. Freeze, Scarecrow, and Poison Ivy, among many others. Ra's al Ghul is often cited as Batman's greatest intellectual and physical equal, while Bane made history by defeating Batman in a way no villain had before.
