The Rook Magazine
In the late 1970s, Warren Publishing launched The Rook Magazine, a 14-issue series blending science fiction, fantasy, and historical adventure. The title centered on time-traveling hero Restin Dane, known as The Rook, who crossed paths with figures like Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, and the American Eagle, while also facing the alien Voltar. Anchored by frequent writers Will Richardson, Bill DuBay, and Budd Lewis, and brought to life by artists such as Lee Elias, Luis Bermejo, and Anton Caravana, the magazine stood out for its pulpy, genre-mixing ambition during Warren’s horror-dominated era. It remains a distinctive artifact of late-period Warren, showcasing their willingness to experiment beyond their famous black-and-white horror anthologies.
