About the series
In the mid-1970s, DC Comics gave the legendary strongman a cosmic twist with Hercules Unbound, a 12-issue series that dropped the demigod into a post-apocalyptic future. Writers Gerry Conway, David Michelinie, and Cary Bates paired Hercules with a telepathic dog and a young boy as he battled threats from both myth and science fiction. The book is especially notable for its striking visuals, with early career work from Walter Simonson and José Luis García-López alongside DC veteran Curt Swan. It stands as a curious, short-lived experiment in blending sword-and-sandal heroics with DC's then-contemporary sci-fi and disaster storytelling.
