Mark Retera’s DirkJan, published by Big Balloon from 1996 to 1999, is a short-lived Dutch comic series that follows the absurd, deadpan misadventures of its titular character. Over just three issues, Retera’s minimalist art and dry humor established a cult favorite for its offbeat take on everyday life. Though brief, the series remains a distinctive example of late-90s European alternative comics.
