History

Mark Retera, born in 1964 in Eindhoven, created DirkJan in 1989 while studying cognitive science at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (now Radboud University), with the strip debuting in Critic, the psychology students' union magazine, before migrating to the broader student monthly ANS. The series gained national exposure when the commercial comics magazine SjoSji — at the time the Netherlands' only such title — began running the strips, prompting Retera to evolve the cast: most student sidekicks were written out, leaving Bert as DirkJan's constant companion. Big Balloon, the Heemstede-based publisher that had emerged from a 1990 management buyout of the Oberon imprint (itself formerly part of VNU), published the first album in 1996 as a softcover, with the issue later seeing multiple print runs including at least a fourth edition — evidence of strong early demand. Retera, who was already contributing caricatures to the Dutch weekly Panorama alongside his strip work, received the Stripschappenning award in 1996 — the very year this debut album appeared.
