From 1986 to 2004, Cerebus was the flagship title of Dave Sim and Gerhard’s Aardvark-Vanaheim imprint, a sprawling, 17-issue series that followed the fortunes of the titular anthropomorphic aardvark through a satirical fantasy world. Sim’s dense, idiosyncratic writing and Gerhard’s meticulous background art defined the book’s unique visual and narrative voice, evolving from sword-and-sorcery parody into a deeply philosophical, often controversial examination of politics, religion, and gender.
