When the transcontinental Red Chief explodes under mysterious circumstances, Tom Mix learns the truth from the War Department: the saboteur Doctor Goliath has been deceived—the Army's secret XP-80 mystery plane was never aboard. Tom agrees to guard the real plane as it travels by ordinary freight car to the coast, but Goliath's ruthless operatives strike again, sending Tom plunging into the desert while the train vanishes without a trace into the Solo Bend wilderness. Now Tom must race against time to find the missing train, the stolen plane, and the young woman Jane caught in the crossfire—before Goliath escapes with both.
