School Friend #187 is an anthology featuring multiple stories. "Secret Member of the Silent Three" follows Betty Roland, Joan Derwent, and Peggy West, members of a secret school society called the Silent Three, as they help their cousin Diana Graham uncover a mystery involving an ancient beacon and face threats of expulsion from unpopular teacher Miriam Potter. In "Lonely Boy of Lonely Isle" by Hazel Armitage, Laurie Benison works with Professor Staniforth on a scientific experiment involving a small boat, and discovers that Rolfe Fanshaw, the professor's son and her enemy, has been wrongly accused of stealing valuable violins; she ultimately clears his name and they reconcile. "Nina—The News Reel Girl" by Jane Preston shows Nina, a film photographer for the Maybank Film Agency, attempting to gain entry to a fancy Carnival Ball by obtaining a television set as a prop, leading to a comedic adventure involving a stolen suitcase and a cardboard dummy television model.
