School Friend #186 is an anthology featuring three picture stories. "Secret Member of the Silent Three" follows Betty Roland, Joan Derwent, and Peggy West as members of a secret society investigating a mystery at their school; Joan is caught as a member by rival Miriam Porter, and the three girls in their society robes kindle an old beacon on its original site, believing it holds a clue to solving a vital mystery. "Lonely Boy of Lonely Isle" by Hazel Armitage depicts Lynne Benson's conflict with the fishermen of Lonely Isle when she attempts to use their boat for a scientific experiment, leading to village resentment and suspicion that she harbors a secret. "Nina—The News Reel Girl" by Jane Preston shows Nina Taylor, a news reel photographer, investigating a haunted corridor at the Maybank Film Agency after being asked to film the ghost, which she discovers is connected to the Dower House and involves a mysterious figure appearing in a mirror.
