School Friend #116 is an anthology that includes three main stories. "Secret Friends of the Sports Mistress" follows Miss Dale, a young sports mistress at Abbotsfield who was dismissed through a prefect's plot, as she secretly helps Heather and her chum win a crucial relay race test against St. Meg's school. "Freda's Quest at the Boys' School" by Stella Stirling centers on Freda attempting to retrieve her grandfather's clock from the boys' school, where she becomes entangled in a mystery involving the clock's location and Brian Tomlinson's involvement with the prefect Mogson. "Leave It to Everybody's Help!" by Penelope Desmond depicts Joy and Bunty's effort to help their friend Reg Parker solve a business problem by demonstrating a drop-test with a valuable vase to American buyers, overcoming obstacles from Mr. Parker's skeptical manager and unexpected complications.
